Other Brain-related Breathing Disorders

There are several other less prevalent breathing disorders that are not currently well-treated by drugs or devices, which could possibly be addressed with agents such as our Ampakines, that enhance or normalize breathing by acting at the respiratory rhythm generating center in the brain. These include genetic disorders such as Pompe Disease, RETT syndrome, congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS or Ondines’s curse), and breathing disorders associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Certain spinal cord injury patients and pre-mature infants experience breathing distress that may be treatable with our Ampakines.  Some investigators believe that sudden death during sleep in patients suffering from these neurodegenerative diseases is due to severe central sleep apnea.
